How to Give

Types of Funds

The Fort Wayne Community Foundation offers several types of funds to meet the needs of donors:

Community Grant Making Funds
Community grant making funds are the broadest option. A community grant making fund can target dollars toward the community's most pressing needs as those needs change over time. By making a gift or bequest to create a community grant making fund, you can create a living legacy that will grow and change with the community.  ( Return to top )

Field of Interest Funds
Field of Interest Funds allow donors to address a cause or issue without the restriction of naming a specific charity. You decide the purpose of the fund (such as fine arts, programs for the handicapped, or services for children), and the Foundation identifies projects that are effectively accomplishing that purpose over time.  ( Return to top )

Donor-Advised Funds
Donor-Advised Funds are the Foundation's most flexible funds. The donor-advised fund allows you to create a philanthropic fund without naming specific charities, and then you or someone you designate recommends grants for charitable purposes.  ( Return to top )

Agency Endowments
Agency Endowments are established by donors who wish to specify a particular charitable agency or organization to receive the proceeds from their fund. The agency benefits from the Foundation's professional endowment management, freeing the agency's staff and board to concentrate on their program and mission. In addition, in certain instances the Fort Wayne Community Foundation will provide a 20% match for gifts made to agency endowments.  Read more about Agency Endowments here.  ( Return to top )

Scholarship Funds
Scholarship Funds can be used to help pay tuition or other expenses for K-12 students or returning adults attending any educational institution (colleges, private and parochial schools or vocational schools). Scholarship funds can be of two types: With an advised scholarship fund, an independent advisory committee works with the Foundation to identify recipients. With a designated scholarship fund, the amount designated for disbursement is automatically paid to a school of your choice. It is then the school's responsibility to annually determine award recipients.  ( Return to top )

Designated Funds
Designated funds are established to ensure that support will be provided to specific eligible nonprofit organizations, often organizations donors have been involved with during their lifetimes. If any of the named organizations goes out of business or changes the purpose of its activities, the Community Foundation will ensure that the donors' charitable goals are continued.  ( Return to top )
